Lunch with a Favorite

Nothing beats a teacher’s feeling when he lunches with a student who makes him proud. Today I have one of those boosts. In Penang Hill, we had Asian cuisine amidst talks that begun at Starbucks and ended in a French pattiserie with delectable desserts — trust the French when it comes to cakes and chocolate. But more heavenly is the experience of conversing with a former high school kid, who just graduated from medical school in Australia, contributed twice his research articles in a Medical Journal, and having a wonderful girlfriend he is to marry in two years — and asking me to marry them! Half the way through the conversation he mentioned the things he learned from me as he volunteered to teach biology to a class: how much he has made it as interesting to them as I did when I taught him. Thank God for reminding me that the little things that I do, do not go to waste. Once in a while, a student, a friend comes back to say, “Thank you.” Life has been definitely better!
